Active SFC
Active SFC is a group of students, parents, and teachers committed to improving physical activity levels in our school community.
Today, Active SFC is proud to launch our five-year strategy for promoting physical activity within our school.
Our mission is to make SFC a more active environment where everyone feels comfortable and included in exercising. We aim to achieve this by focusing on five key areas each year:
- School Environment
- Research
- Policy
- Curriculum
- Extra-Curricular Activities
Each school year, we will select actions from these areas that we believe will make a meaningful difference in students’ lives.
Our Approach
Our strategy is built on five key pillars. Every action we undertake will incorporate elements of these pillars:
- Student Voice
- Fun & Inclusivity
- Curricular Focus
- Promotion of Physical Activity
- Community Links
The Children’s Sport Participation and Physical Activity (CSPPA) Report (2022) revealed that only 12% of post-primary students meet the recommended physical activity levels. While our internal research shows a slightly higher percentage in our school, there is still significant room for improvement.
We are fortunate to have a strong sporting tradition at SFC. We aim to build on this foundation to help all students develop a lifelong love of physical activity, whether through sports or other forms of movement.
The full strategy document is attached below for those who wish to read it in detail.
Launch Event Highlights
Speaking at the strategy launch, Chairperson Gary Brennan said:
“We are very excited to finally launch our strategy. After a major consultation process with students, parents, and teachers, it’s great to be at the stage where we can start implementing our plans. I have personally experienced the benefits of physical activity during my school years, and I hope to help more students have those same positive experiences.”
Student representatives Georgia and Molly added:
“Being part of Active SFC has been a great experience so far. We hope to encourage more students to participate in physical activity in any way they can.”
Principal Fr. McCormack expressed his support:
“I wish to thank Mr. Brennan, along with the staff, students, and parents involved in developing and launching this wonderful initiative. Encouraging increased physical activity among all members of our school community is a fantastic goal.”
Get Involved!
As we launch our strategy, we are seeking expressions of interest from parents, community groups, or anyone who would like to help deliver our initiatives.
We also welcome local businesses interested in supporting our work—whether through sponsorship, promotion, or other means.
Additionally, we are preparing for our biggest-ever Active Schools Week (April 28th – May 2nd). We would love to hear from local activity groups interested in running a workshop, taster session, or student talk during the event.
Anyone interested in getting involved, please make contact through the school office or email gary.brennan@stflannanscollege.ie
Thank you from the Active SFC Committee!
