Remembering Bishop Willie Walsh

Bishop Emeritus of Killaloe, Willie Walsh, has sadly passed away at the age of 90. His loss is deeply felt across the diocese, where he was dearly loved for his kindness, wisdom, and dedication to ministry. He spent his entire priesthood serving in Ennis, including many years at St. Flannan’s College, in the Cathedral Parish, and later as Bishop of Killaloe. Even in retirement, he remained active in the community.

Bishop Walsh was a teacher of Mathematics, Physics, and Religion at St. Flannan’s College for over 25 years. He was a dedicated educator, known for his patience and encouragement, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. Alongside his teaching, he played a key role in the sporting life of the school, managing the Harty Cup teams and mentoring young hurlers with passion and commitment. His love for the game continued long after his time at the school, and he was recently present at the Harty Cup final, supporting the latest generation of players.

Only weeks ago, some of our students had the privilege of visiting him at his home to celebrate his 90th birthday. He enjoyed reminiscing about his time in St. Flannan’s, sharing stories and wisdom with the next generation.

Bishop Walsh will be greatly missed by his family, friends, clergy, and the many people whose lives he touched. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
